Bringing joy to seniors with therapy animals

Friends come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Some even have more than two legs. Three years ago, Chandler Place's management company, The Goodman Group, announced the launch of P.A.L.S., or Partnering with Animals to Lift Spirits. This program is the result of an exciting partnership with the University of Minnesota, and it has had a great impact at Chandler Place.

Through P.A.L.S., Chandler Place is working closely with Tanya Bailey, LICSW, who is the animal-assisted interaction program specialist at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and a teaching faculty member at the Center for Spirituality and Healing.

Tanya has more than 20 years of experience providing animal-assisted interaction in mental health, wellness and learning programs for individuals of all ages. Tanya's expertise is one of the reasons they are so thrilled about the P.A.L.S program. First and foremost, P.A.L.S. is designed to live up to its name by lifting the spirits of our residents. The animals help facilitate a unique therapeutic process that improves the physical, social, psychological and cognitive processes of our residents. The range of animals includes chickens, cats, dogs, rabbits and more.

P.A.L.S. is held each Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the Chandler Place Lobby. Residents rarely miss an opportunity to interact with the therapy animals. They come to the Lobby early, choose the perfect place to sit, and wait for the animals to arrive. The animals look forward to visiting each week too — the dogs can always tell which residents have treats in store!

At Chandler Place, we are delighted to have this opportunity to enrich our residents' lives. Say hello to Tanya — and the animals — if you see them around!
