Tartan has several varsity tennis players back this season

The Tartan Titans boys tennis fortunes are looking up this season thanks to the many veterans returning to the courts.

Longtime head coach Larry Fronczak said this year’s squad has a larger-than-average number of boys out for the team

“Additionally, our good numbers are bolstered by several returning players. If there is a weak spot in our lineup, it is with several unproven players at our doubles positions. We are looking for several to step up and fill any weak spots we may have in those positions.”

Captains Austin Bullard and Vinh Nguyen will lead the team. Bullard is a senior who should fare well at the second singles spot.

Nguyen is a junior returnee who plays at the third singles position or can fill in at a doubles spot.

Other players mentioned by Fronczak were senior Elijah Vang; sophomores Brody Croonquist (first singles), Ryan Lenard (first doubles), Chris Bade (doubles), Matt Zawislak (doubles) and Ben Carpenter (doubles).

Expected to fill other spots in the Tartan lineup will be freshmen Ethan Thao (singles and doubles) and Bennett Poganski (singles and doubles), along with eighth-grader Gavin Stephenson (singles and doubles).

Assisting with the Tartan boys tennis program will be Jason Arndt.

It didn’t take Fronczak long to pick Mahtomedi as the team most likely to be on top of the heap in the Metro East Conference come mid-May when the section playoffs begin.

The Titans have already been tested when they dropped a 0-7 count against the Mahtomedi Zephyrs in their first match on April 7.

Next the Titans posted 5-2 win over Washington on April 8.

Up next, the Titans will face Hill-Murray on the Pioneers’ home turf Thursday, April 16, and will stay on the road Tuesday, April 21 for a match at South St. Paul. Their next home match will be Wednesday, April 22 against the Johnson Governors

The matches begin at 3:30 p.m.
