Prep softball playoffs in full swing

Even in years when the weather cooperates, the high school spring sports season seems to go by in a flash. Despite it being only May 19, the fastpitch softball playoffs have already gone deep into the bracket.

Here’s a look at where Roseville and Concordia Academy sit.

Concordia Academy

Through three rounds of the Section 4AA playoffs, the Beacons are one six teams still in the running, but have no more room for error. Concordia has one loss in the double elimination format tournament and faces the prospect of having to win five straight games to reach the state tournament.

Concordia Academy, the seventh seed, used a potent offense to get victories last week. The Beacons scored 16 runs in beating 10th-seeded St. Paul Academy 16-10 in the first round on May 14.

In the second round, Minnehaha Academy came up with the offensive outburst and beat the Beacons 10-4. The loss dropped Concordia into the loser’s bracket and an elimination game against a familiar foe.

Awaiting Concordia Academy was sixth-seeded and perennial section power St. Anthony Village, which suffered through its worst regular season in more than 10 years. The Beacons won another high-scoring playoff affair 10-8 to end the Huskies’ season.

With the victory, Concordia advances to the fourth round on Tuesday, when it travels to fifth-seeded St. Paul Highland Park. A win Tuesday sets up another elimination game on Thursday against either third-seeded St. Paul Como Park or eighth-seeded St. Croix Lutheran.

The Raiders wound up with the third seed in the Section 4AAA playoffs and with it comes an automatic berth into the double-elimination portion of the tournament. Roseville plays its first playoff game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. on its home field.

Roseville’s opponent is most likely going to be sixth-seeded Hill-Murray, which hosted 11th-seeded South St. Paul in the first round on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

Roseville enters the post-season on a roll after closing out the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. Six of the teams the Raiders beat during that streak are also in Section 4AAA.

The biggest win in that stretch came on May 13 against Woodbury. Roseville opened the season with a 9-0 loss to the Royals, but turned the tables in the final game of the regular season, winning 1-0.

Woodbury is the No. 1 seed in Section 4AAA. Perennial contender North St. Paul is seeded second and Stillwater rounds out the top four at No. 4.

Following Tuesday’s game, the tournament shifts to the McKnight softball complex in North St. Paul.
