Roseville Area High School diver Michelle Schlossmacher Smith took fifth at the state meet last fall as a freshman. Heading into her upcoming sophomore year, Schlossmacher Smith is definitely a contender to ascend to the top of the medals stand.

Earlier this year, Schlossmacher Smith competed at the region championship and performed well enough to advance to the zone championship meet. Among the divers Schlossmacher Smith beat at the region meet was the state runner-up last year.

The region meet took place in suburban Milwaukee in late April. Schlossmacher Smith finished 19th and was the highest-placing Minnesotan in the meet that featured competitors from Texas, Indiana, Ohio and Nebraska.

That finish was good enough to send Schlossmacher Smith to the Zone D meet in late June at the University of Iowa. There she finished 22nd.

At the state meet last fall, Stillwater's Liz Click won the state diving title as a senior. She will be a freshman on the University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team this season. The runner-up at state was Rachel Bertram of Buffalo, who is a senior this year. Schlossmacher Smith finished ahead of Bertram at the region meet back in April.

Practice for the upcoming fall season begins on Aug. 17. Roseville's first competition is the Suburban East Conference relays on Aug. 27.
