Area athletes compete for state glory

The fall prep sports season came to a close on the weekend before Thanksgiving with a pair of state tournaments and the Bulletin-area high schools had representatives at both. Here's a recap of the state girls swimming and diving meet and the state adapted soccer tournament.

Girls swimming and diving

Eight members of the Mounds View High School team and two from the St. Anthony Swim Team participated in the state meet held Nov. 18-20 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The eight Mustangs competed in four events. Sophomore Jackie Gawaroski competed in the diving event and finished seventh overall with an 11-dive score of 401.25.

She was one of seven finalists to reach 400 points.

Mounds View's other three state events were relays. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of eighth grader Zoe Rylander, juniors Megan Carver and Libby Fleming and sophomore Hannah Aitkin teamed up to finish third in the consolation final and 11th overall. Their time of 1:39.52 was 0.64 seconds faster than the time they posted in the preliminaries.

Fleming, Rylander and Aitkin joined senior McLaren Curphy in the 400-yard freestyle relay but the foursome was unable to advance to the finals. Their preliminary time of 3:41.87 left them 0.77 seconds shy of a finals spot.

Curphy and Aitkin also competed in the 200-yard medley relay along with senior Sophie LaMere and freshman Serena Chan. The quartet posted a time of 1:52.82 in the preliminaries and did not advance to the finals.

Mounds View wound up with 24 points and that put the Mustangs in 22nd place.

The St. Anthony Swim Team, a four-school co-op that includes athletes from St. Anthony Village High School, DeLaSalle, St. Agnes and St. Croix Lutheran, sent two swimmers to the state meet. Senior Alissa Larson from St. Anthony and sophomore Erin McCarthy from DeLaSalle represented SAST.

McCarthy turned in a pair of all-state performances in her two state events. McCarthy was the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.77. Only Edina sophomore Kelli McCarthy, who posted a time of 4:56.91, was faster.

Erin McCarthy also qualified for state in the 200-yard freestyle and she also made all-state in that event. Her time of 1:53.47 was good enough for eighth place.

Larson closed out her prep swimming career by making the state meet in the 50-yard freestyle. Her time of 25.43 seconds left her in 19th place after the preliminaries and she did not advance to the finals.

McCarthy's two finishes resulted in 28 team points and left SAST in 19th in the final team standings.

Adapted soccer

All three Bulletin-area schools were represented at the state adapted soccer tournament held Nov. 20-21 at Stillwater Area High School. The Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville Rams competed in the PI division while the Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village Strikers played in the CI division tournament.

The Rams, seeded fourth in the north, dropped their opening match but bounced back to win the next two and claim the consolation (fifth place) championship.
Dakota United, the No. 1 south seed, beat the Rams 10-3 in the quarterfinals.

Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville shook off the loss and beat St. Paul Humboldt, the No. 3 south seed, 6-1 in the consolation semifinals. The Rams then won the consolation trophy with an 11-6 victory over Minneapolis South, the No. 2 south seed, in the final round.

Sophomore Grant Drew of the Rams was named to the PI division all-tournament team.

Like the Rams, Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village lost its opening match but fought back to reach the consolation final.

The Strikers were seeded fourth in the North and faced the south No. 1 seed in Minneapolis Roosevelt. Despite the difference in seeds, Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village went toe-to-toe with the Teddies.

Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village led by two late in the contest but Roosevelt tied it and then scored the game-winning goal with 56.4 seconds left.

Senior Lane Lund scored four times in the Strikersí loss.

The last-minute defeat could have been devastating but the Strikers put it behind them and faced Chaska/Chanhassen/Prior Lake/Shakopee in the consolation semifinals. Columbia Heights/St. Anthony Village picked up a 6-4 victory to advance to the consolation final.

Awaiting the Strikers in the final match was South Washington County, the south No. 2 seed. SWC turned out to be too much for the Strikers and came away with a 6-2 win.

Junior Tyler Krawczynski of the Strikers was named to the CI division all-tournament team.
