Girls hockey playoffs continue this week

The Hill-Murray and North/Tartan girls hockey teams both play in Section 4AA, which held its quarterfinals last weekend. The four surviving teams advanced to the semifinals on Feb. 9 at Aldrich Arena.

Hill-Murray is the No. 1 seed and faced eighth-seeded Woodbury on Feb. 5 at Roseville Arena. Sixth-seeded North/Tartan also played that night against third-seeded Mounds View.

All four quarterfinal games were played past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

Hill-Murray, the two-time defending state champion, was the only team in the state to make it through the regular season without a loss. The next closest team record-wise was Blake, which entered the post-season with two losses, one of which came at the hands of the Pioneers.

The closest Class AA teams were Blaine and Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids, which lost four regular-season games each.

Woodbury, Hill-Murray’s first-round playoff opponent, won just three times during the regular season.

Awaiting the Hill-Murray/Woodbury winner in the semifinals is the winner of fourth-seeded Roseville versus fifth-seeded Stillwater, the only other teams to win the section title in the past seven seasons.

North/Tartan fell to the sixth seed despite having more victories than three of the teams seeded higher. North/Tartan won 15 regular-season games while its first-round opponent Mounds View won 13. Roseville had 12 wins and Stillwater had only eight.

The North/Tartan vs. Mounds View winner takes on either second-seeded White Bear Lake or seventh-seeded Irondale/St. Anthony in the other semifinal on Feb. 9. White Bear Lake finished third in the Suburban East Conference and Irondale is the lone team in the section from the Northwest Suburban Conference.

The two semifinal winners meet for the section championship on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Roseville Arena.
