Image editing on the cheap

It’s possible to edit your photos without purchasing expensive software. On Monday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., participants will learn about some of the top web-based and desktop applications for image editing, including Picasa, Gimp and Flickr’s Aviary. 

They should bring their smartphone, tablet or laptop if they have one, loaded with a few photos they’ve taken. The workshop will be held at the South St. Paul Public Library, 106 Third Ave. N. The event is presented by the Twin Cities Media Alliance and funded by MELSA.

‘Stassen Again’

On Monday, Feb. 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Steve Werle, author of “Stassen Again,” will discuss his book at the West St. Paul library, 199 Wentworth Ave. E. 

He will talk about the political rise of South St. Paul lawyer Harold E. Stassen, who was the 25th governor of Minnesota. Werle’s book will be available for purchase.


Nature Painting: Winter in the Woods

Keep warm this winter by fueling your creative fire with Dodge Nature Center’s nature-inspired art classes. 

On Monday, Feb. 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. participants will make a simple, yet beautiful winter scene on a canvas to take home. They will try new painting techniques, or practice and share the skills they already have. Hot cocoa and tea will be provided. 

Use the Dodge Farm Entrance, 1701 Charlton St., West St. Paul, for this event. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $10, and it’s open to adults and teens ages 14 and up.


Tape Town

Bring a toy car to zoom around on roads made of tape on Thursday, Feb. 25, from 11 to 11:45 a.m., at the South St. Paul Library, 106 Third Ave N. 

“Towns” made of different activities will be sprinkled throughout the road system to provide fun (and necessary) pit stops. 

This program is geared toward children ages 2 to 6. No registration is necessary. 


Local author appearance

Author and local historian Lois Glewwe will present a slideshow featuring highlights from her new book, “A Brief History of South St. Paul,” on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at South St. Paul Public Library, 106 Third Ave. N.  

Books will be available for purchase and signing. 


Inver Glen Library events

Inver Glen Library will have a Young Writers Group on Tuesday, Feb. 23., from 3 to 4 p.m. Join other teen writers in doing inspiring writing exercises, sharing feedback, being creative and having fun. The program is for kids ages 10-16. 

The library will host a program presented by Artistry called Little Hands: Hungry Caterpillar Puppets, Thursday, Feb. 25, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Children ages 3 to 5 will use oil pastel and tempera paints to create colorful accordion caterpillar stick puppets inspired by Eric Carle’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Registration is required.

‘Mulan Jr.’

Visitation Middle School will be performing Disney’s “Mulan Jr.” Feb. 26-28. 

Performances on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, will be at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m.

The show will be presented in DeSales Auditorium, 2455 Visitation Drive, Mendota Heights, and the cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.


Bone stories

How an animal looks, moves and eats is written in the shape of its bones. On Saturday, Feb. 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., children will explore the world of bones in a hands-on program at Dodge Nature Center, 1701 Charlton St., West St. Paul.

They will examine bones of animals large and small, and dissect an owl pellet. 

This program is recommended for ages 8 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $9 for non-members and $7 for members. 


Chorale concert

The River Heights Chorale, with special guest, Lumina, will celebrate 10 years of music with a concert on Saturday, Feb. 27, at First Presbyterian Church, 535 20th Ave. N., South St. Paul.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a celebratory reception.


College Prep Fair

There will be a “Thinking College Early Fair” at Harding High School, 1540 E. Sixth St., St. Paul, on Sunday, Feb. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 

Students and their families will be able to meet college representatives from a variety of institutions, learn about admission requirements and financial aid. 

There will be entertainment, door prizes and free childcare. The event is for students in grades 5-12 and their families.


St. Paul Hiking Club

The St. Paul Hiking Club announces these February and March hikes:

• Sunday, Feb. 21 - 2:30 p.m. Annual membership meeting, members only.

• Tuesday, Feb. 23 - 11:30 a.m. Meet in the northwest corner of the parking lot of Costco, 1431 Beam Ave., Maplewood (Country View Lane and County Rd. D) We’ll hike the Bruce Vento Trail. Treats: Gulden’s, 2999 N Highway 61.

• Sunday, Feb. 28 - 2:30 p.m. Meet on the south side of Super Target, 449 Commerce Dr., in Woodbury. (parking area near Tamarack Rd. off Woodbury Dr.) We will hike on trails in Wilmes Lake area and Summit Pointe neighborhoods.

Sunday hikes are about five miles and last about two hours. Tuesday hikes are about three miles and last about one hour.

• Tuesday, March 1 - 11:30 a.m. Meet at Bakers Square Restaurant, 2239 Ford Parkway, in Highland Park for a residential hike.

• Sunday, March 6 - 2:30 p.m. Meet at Halftime Rec Bar & Grill, 1013 Front Ave., St. Paul. We’ll hike around Como Park.

• Tuesday, March 8 - 11:30 a.m. Meet at the corner of Baker St. and Cherokee Ave. in St. Paul (6 blocks south of the High Bridge on Smith and 2 blocks west on Baker). We’ll do a residential hike.

• Sunday, March 13 – 2:30 p.m. Meet in the parking lot on Broderick Blvd. by the Holiday Station, 9087 Broderick Blvd. in Inver Grove Heights. (strip mall lot also houses Cunningham Sports, Subway).Take Highway 52 south, use the Concord St. exit, take a right, go under Highway 52 (55) to Broderick and turn left into lot. We’ll see the historic Reuben Freeman house.

• Tuesday, March 15 - 11:30 a.m. Meet in the parking lot of the shopping center near Taste of Scandinavia, 2900 Rice St., Little Canada, just north of County Rd. C2. We’ll do a residential and parks hike in Roseville
