Bob Murphy leaves St. Mark’s

Long-time music director Robert Murphy has left St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, North St. Paul, to take a position as music director at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, North Dakota. A celebration of the nearly 30 years that Murphy spent at St. Mark’s was held on January 17.

The church service celebration included all the musical groups at St. Mark’s including the Choir of St. Mark’s, the Jubilee Handbell Choir, Colla Voce and Joyful Noise youth choirs, the Morning Psalm Band and singers from the contemporary services plus many long-time musical friends of Murphy’s. Some of the friends joined with the choirs and about 20 instrumentalists added to the festivities. Leading the service were Senior Pastor Bonnie Wilcox, Associate Pastor Ivy Huston and Intern Pastor Kate Knutson. Nearly 300 people attended the church service and the luncheon that followed.

Murphy had musical friends throughout the Twin Cities. In addition to his duties at St. Mark’s Church, he was the director of the Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra, accompanied several high school choirs, including South St. Paul and Henry Sibley, and he participated with the Century College Band and Shoreview Community Band on occasion.

Murphy will be missed at St. Mark’s and in the community but he is looking forward to the new challenges in Jamestown.
