Mounds View through to section semis

The top-seeded Mounds View High School boys tennis team, as expected, had little trouble in its post-season opener. The Mustangs, the No. 1 seed in Section 4AA and the defending Class AA state champions, began this week two victories away from another trip to state.

Following a first-round bye, Mounds View swept eighth-seeded St. Paul Como Park 7-0 in the quarterfinals on May 20. Como Park reached the quarterfinals by beating ninth-seeded Hill-Murray 5-2 in the first round.

The four semifinalists played on May 23, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin. Mounds View hosted fourth-seeded Stillwater while No. 2 seed Centennial entertained third-seeded Mahtomedi.

The two semifinal winners meet for the section title on May 25 at 3:30 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. The Class AA state team tournament, also at Baseline, is June 7-8.

Once the section team title has been decided, the singles and doubles tournaments will be held May 26 and 31 at Baseline. The top two finishers in each draw advance to the state tournament on June 9-10.

The Knights were the No. 4 seed in Section 5AA and went 1-1 in the first two rounds of the tournament. Irondale had little trouble with 13th-seeded Robbinsdale Cooper, beating the Hawks 7-0.

In the quarterfinals, Irondale hosted fifth-seeded Totino-Grace. The Eagles avenged a regular-season loss to the Knights by beating them 5-2 in the post-season.

Totino-Grace went on to lose 7-0 to top-seeded Wayzata in the semifinals.

The section championship is on the line May 24 as Wayzata and second-seeded Maple Grove square off at Park Center High School.

The Section 5AA singles and doubles tournaments are May 27 and June 1 at the Baseline Tennis Center.

St. Anthony Village

The Huskies, seeded fourth in Section 5A, went 1-1 in the playoffs last week. St. Anthony opened the post-season with a 4-3 win over fifth-seeded Minneapolis Edison and then fell 5-2 to top-seeded Columbia Heights in the semifinals.

Columbia Heights went on to capture the section championship with a 5-2 win over second-seeded Fridley in the finals on May 20.

In beating Edison, St. Anthony picked up two wins at singles and two wins at doubles. Sophomore Kevin McCann won his singles match 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 while junior Sean Johnson won his singles match 6-4, 6-3. The Huskies’ doubles points came from the duos of senior Tseten Dorjee and eighth grader Quinn Benda and junior Leo Favorite and sophomore Michael Wehmas.

Against Columbia Heights, Benda won at third singles while senior Quinn Bellestri and junior Nick Kroening won at first doubles. Bellestri and Kroening took their match by winning tie-breakers in both sets.

Two of the matches that St. Anthony lost against Columbia Heights went three sets. Johnson fell in three sets at fourth singles and Dorjee and McCann lost a three-set match at third doubles.

The Section 5A individual tournament is May 24-25 at Spring Lake Park High School.
