‘Complete revamp’ underway at Rosedale

Work on a roughly year-long renovation of Rosedale Center started Oct. 3 near the Herberger’s department store. Above is how the area will look when work is completed; below is how it looked Oct. 5.

A goal of the Rosedale Center renovation work, said general manager Scott Michaelis, is to open up the mall with new sight lines. Above is how the interior of the mall will look once work is complete, below is the mall on Oct. 5.

Work includes new look, new department store

Rosedale Center is getting its first interior makeover in more than 20 years.

Mall management is describing the work as a “complete revamp.” The remodeling began Oct. 3 and is set to be done by next year’s holiday shopping season.

“It’s all about the shopper experience,” said Rosedale general manager Scott Michaelis. “These days, with the competition of online shopping, we want to inspire them and be efficient and comfortable when they shop and dine.”

The 12-month project includes exterior and interior renovations along with new branding and signage throughout the mall. The restrooms, furniture, lighting and finishes will all be redone and new stores are planned.

New seating areas will have built-in charging stations, Michaelis said, set up to allow people to take a break or check their email.

“It’s all about extending the stay,” he said.

Rosedale will be “fully operational” during the remodel, Michaelis said, and the work will be done at night.

“The most dramatic effect that people will see is all new flooring and sight lines,” Michaelis said, describing the coming look as “sleeker, toned-down.” The concept is being called “North,” aiming to be a reflection of the Twin Cities area.

The remodel will be partially concurrent with the construction of a 125,000-square-foot expansion that will house a Von Maur department store. Michaelis said the expansion will begin next summer and the store should be open summer 2018.

The Rosedale Von Maur will be the Iowa-based retailer’s second Minnesota location.

A new, 21,000-square-foot, two-level concourse will be built to connect Von Maur to the mall, and Michaelis said that space could house 10-12 additional stores.

Von Maur is going in on the northeast side of the mall between JCPenney and the AMC Theatres. Michaelis said a new parking deck being built in that same area is set to open Nov. 1.

Earlier this year, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported the work at Rosedale is a $100 million project; Michaelis declined to comment on the work’s cost.

Rosedale opened in 1969 and houses some 160 stores in 1.15 million square-feet of space.

Michaelis said the last major interior renovation at the mall happened in 1993. The latest addition to the mall, the outdoor plaza area, opened a decade ago.
