Beacons volleyball rolls in tournament opener

The Concordia Academy volleyball team got its third consecutive trip to the state tournament off to a good start although it wasn’t easy. The fourth-seeded Beacons took down fifth-seeded Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta in four games and all four were nailbiters.

After dropping game one, the Beacons rebounded to take the next three and all four games went down to the wire. In two of them, the winning team needed more than 25 points to secure the victory.

The set scores were 23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 30-28.

The match could have gone a much different direction if the Beacons hadn’t been able to stave off a set point in game two. Concordia led by as many as seven in game two and appeared poised to tie the match at one set apiece. Morris had other ideas, however, and rallied to take a 25-24 lead to pull within one point of a two-sets-to-none advantage.

Concordia Academy was able to stop the bleeding by scoring the next three points to even the match.

Things weren’t any easier after that though as the Beacons eked out a two-point victory in game three and needed overtime again in winning game four.

As match-ups between the fourth and fifth seeds should be, the Concordia/Morris quarterfinal was the tightest of the four quarterfinals in Class AA. The other three were all decided in three games and none of them was particularly close.

Concordia Academy is one of three teams in the tournament that also played in last year’s Class AA state event. The Beacons finished second last year. Also back in the tournament again this year are Hermantown, which went 0-2 at state in 2015, and Morris Area, which finished sixth last year.

The other quarterfinal winners were No. 1-seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo, second-seeded Maple Lake and third-seeded Kasson-Mantorville. Concordia Academy faced Kenyon-Wanamingo and Maple Lake battled Kasson-Mantorville in the semifinals.

The tournament continued with the second round on Nov. 11 and the finals on Nov. 12. Both days’ action took place past the deadline for this edition of the Review.
