Mounds View sends eight to state swim meet

Eight different Mounds View High School athletes are set to finish their fall sports season by competing in the state swimming and diving meet this weekend. Those eight competitors combined to give the Mustangs eight state entrants.

The Class AA state meet runs Wednesday through Friday at the University of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center. The Class AA sessions start each evening at 6 p.m. and the meet kicks off with the diving preliminaries on Wednesday. The swimming prelims are Thursday and the finals in all events are on Friday.

Mounds View earned those state entries at the Section 4AA meet held Nov. 10-12 at Stillwater Area Junior High School.

Leading the way for Mounds View in terms of total state events is junior Hannah Aitkin, who had a hand in four of the Mustangs state qualifying events. Individually, Aitkin qualified for state in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.

Aitkin finished second in the 200 freestyle at the section meet and that made her an automatic qualifier as the top two finishers in each swimming event advance to state. Atikin also beat the state qualifying standard with a time of 1:55.34 so even if she had finished lower than second, she would have still qualified.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Aitkin placed third but advanced to state by beating the qualifying standard with a time of 5:11.87.

Aitkin also swam on a pair of state-qualifying relay teams. She helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team finish first and the 400-yard freestyle relay team take second to advance to state.

Joining Aitkin the 200-yard freestyle relay were senior Libby Fleming, junior Chella LaMere and freshman Zoe Rylander. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, it was Aitkin, Fleming and Rylander teaming up with freshman Alli Misialek.

Misialek and LaMere are also headed to state in the 200-yard medley relay, along with senior Madie Petry and junior Dalanie Oliver.

In addition to the relays, Misialek and Rylander also qualified for state in individual events. Rylander took second place in the 50-yard freestyle to make state while Misialek was runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly to qualify.

Mounds View’s eighth and final state entry went to senior Jackie Gaworski, who is headed back to state in the diving event. She took second at sections to defending Class AA state champion Michelle Schlossmacher-Smith of Roseville.

In the team standings at the section meet, Mounds View was runner-up to Stillwater. The Ponies claimed the section team title with 584 points and the Mustangs were next with 469 points.

The St. Anthony Swim Team, a co-op team with athletes from St. Anthony Village, St. Agnes, DeLaSalle and St. Croix Lutheran, landed in seventh place in the team standings with 111.5 points. No competitors from the St. Anthony Swim Team advanced to state.

The Knights were also shut out in terms of state entries. Competing in Section 5AA, Irondale finished sixth in the team standings with 98.5 points.

Wayzata ran away with the team championship by amassing 642 points. Runner-up Robbinsdale Armstrong was second with 448 points.

Irondale’s top finishes at the section meet came from its relay teams.

The 200-yard medley relay team of senior Tess Skubal, sophomore Sydney McCollor, freshman Olivia Wolf and seventh grader Isabella Norton finished sixth. Skubal, McCollor and seniors Courtney Swanson and Kaili Puchtell teamed up to also take sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Wolf, Nordstrom, Puchtell and seventh grader Mezi Koke took seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Irondale sent a competitor to the A final in one other event. McCollor qualified for the finals in the 500-yard freestyle and took eighth.
