Tartan basketball teams claim holiday titles

The Tartan High School varsity basketball teams brought home championships over the holiday break last month. Both teams were a perfect 3-0 in their respective events.

Tartan’s boys hoops squad, which hosted its own long-running holiday tournament, won all three of its games by double digits to claim the title. The Titans opened the tournament by beating Chisago Lakes, a Class AAA state-tournament team last season, 61-50.

In the semifinals, Tartan faced St. Paul Como Park and ran away with a 93-56 victory. The Titans won the championship by beating Forest Lake 74-59 in the final.

Tartan was able to spread out the scoring duties throughout the tournament as five different Titans reached double digits in at least one game. Senior Jordan Horn scored at least 10 points in all three games and led Tartan with 17 points in the semifinals against Como Park. Ten different Tartan players recorded points in that game.

Senior Joevon Walker posted the single-game high score for Tartan in the tournament by scoring 25 in the championship game. Seniors Kingston Myles, Noah Whalen and Jordan Thompson scored in double figures in two of the three games and senior Damien Goergen hit double digits in one game.

Tartan’s girls team won the inaugural Tie It Teal tournament hosted by St. Anthony Village High School. The Titans swept St. Croix Prep, Richfield and the host Huskies to bring home the championship.

Tartan stifled St. Croix Prep 55-18 in the first round of the four-team, round-robin format tournament. Sophomore Kendra Ekereke paced the Titans with a dozen points and freshman Aurora Roberts added 10.

The Titans were pushed more in game two but came away with a 51-38 victory over Richfield. Senior Zaria Whitlock led all scorers with 13 points.

In the final game of the tournament, Tartan faced St. Anthony, which also won its first two games of the tournament, for the championship. Tartan claimed the title by beating the Huskies 61-52.
