Mustangs compete at true-team state

The Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team competed in the state true-team meet last weekend and went up against some of the deepest and best squads in Class AA. The Mustangs finished ninth.

The Mustangs were led by junior co-captain Quinn Doan and freshmen Issac Pan and Will Quackenbush, all of whom had a pair of top 16 finishes. The locals also had top 16 finishes in all three relay events.

In the opening 200-yard medley relay, the “A” unit of Isaac Pan, sophomore Will Goldman, Doan and junior Kyle Peterson touched the wall in a season-best time of 1:43.07 to claim 11th place. In the 200-yard freestyle, Quackenbush swam to a season-best 1:48.70 to finish ninth. Senior co-captain Albert Pan finished 20th in a season-best time of 1:52.25.

Isaac Pan had an outstanding season-best swim of 2:00.88 in the 200-yard individual medley to finish eighth. With that performance, the hard-working freshman cracked the Mustangs all-time top 10 honor roll and now holds down the ninth spot on that elite list. Junior Jason Lou also posted a season-best time of 2:13.43 in the event to finish 31st. In the 50-yard freestyle, Peterson posted a season-best time of 23.75 seconds to claim 22nd place among 48 finishers.

Doan, who recently made the Mustangs all-time top 10 list in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.14 seconds, just missed that mark on Saturday. But his 54.18 swim earned him a ninth-place finish for the Mustangs. Junior Atakan Yurttas also had a season-best performance of 1:02.10 in the event to finish 36th. In the 100-yard freestyle, Lou touched the wall in a season-best time of 52.78 to finish 26th. Quackenbush had an excellent season-best swim of 4:55.55 in the 500-yard freestyle to finish 10th, leaving him just thirteen one-hundredths of a second away from cracking the Mustangs’ top 10 list.

The Mustangs placed two teams in the top 16 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The first unit of Boyles, Doan, Isaac Pan and Quackenbush was ninth in 1:31.94 while the quartet of Goldman, Albert Pan, Lou and Peterson finished 15th in 1:34.47. In the 100-yard backstroke, Albert Pan recorded a season-best time of 59.75 seconds to claim 22nd place. Isaac Pan had another season-best swim of 1:02.61 to finish ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Doan was 14th in a season-best 1:03.38. Goldman (1:05.27) and sophomore Max Jytyla (1:11.35) finished 21st and 37th, respectively. Both were season-best performances.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Boyles, Albert Pan, Martini and Quackenbush touched the wall in 3:26.73, just a tenth of a second off the Mustangs season-best performance in this event, to claim 15th place.

This was Mounds View’s first appearance in the true-team state meet in five years. The Mustangs qualified as a wild card entry after finishing second to Stillwater at the section true-team meet on Jan. 21.

Minnetonka ran away with the true-team state championship with 2,546 points. Stillwater was the runner-up with 1,830.5 points. Another Suburban East Conference team, Forest Lake, finished eighth with 1,177.5 points and Mounds View was next with 1,106.5 points.

Also last week, Mounds View went up against Forest Lake in a conference dual and dropped a 94-89 decision.

Mounds View is 4-2 in conference duals with two remaining. The Mustangs host Cretin-Derham Hall on Feb. 2 and Woodbury on Feb. 9.
