Golfers hitting the links this year at Inver Wood Golf Course are going to be amazed at what they see. After more than two decades of public play, the course underwent much-needed renovations last fall.

The $2.3 million project began in August and was completed mid-November. It included the complete removal of all the sand traps and rebuilding of all new ones.  The sand traps are equipped with new drainage, upgraded sand, and architecture. This is the first time the bunkers have been redesigned since the course was opened in 1992.

Moynihan explains that some of the new bunkers were strategically placed to steer golfers away from ponds and wooded areas.  With these design changes, the staff is confident that improvements will be made to the pace of play.  An entirely new irrigation system was installed with a new, more eco-friendly designed system to more effectively hydrate the course.

“This will be a much more responsible use of water,” Golf Course Operations Superintendent Matt Moynihan says.

He explains that the renovations were overdue - the average lifetime of irrigation systems is around 20 years, and Inver Wood’s was 25 years old.

There were also upgrades to the driving range.  The expanded length provides for a larger grass tee area, newly designed target areas and 50-foot surround fencing, which allows for an enhanced golf experience.

This spring the freshly renovated course in Inver Grove Heights will be open for public play along with a host of programming.

“You name it we’ve got it,” says Moynihan, pointing out Inver Wood has league offerings for any golfer including; a Men’s league, Women’s League, Sr. Men’s League and Jr. League.  In addition, there is also an 18-hole season long match play championship.

For the juniors and ladies interested in learning and expanding their knowledge of the game, the facility has free clinic opportunities offered throughout the golf season.

A very popular program on Inver Wood’s Executive Golf Course has been the Family Golf Program.  This program enables junior golfers (ages 7 to 18) to play for free with each paid adult green fee Friday through Sunday.

On May 19 to 21, the course will hold a Customer Appreciation Weekend.

“This weekend is our way of saying thank you to our loyal customers. Whether they were citizens of Inver Grove Heights or patrons of the course, they showed a lot of support in playing here through the construction last year,” Moynihan says.

The weekend will feature contests and clinics including a foot golf competition. There will be grilled food outdoors, drawings and giveaways, and golfing demonstrations.

“It’s a chance for people to come out and see the renovations, to show them off, but also get some feedback from the players,” Moynihan says.

Moynihan indicates all the improvements will enhance and make for a more memorable Inver Wood experience.

Be sure to keep an eye on Inver Wood’s Webpage, Facebook or Twitter for updates regarding lessons, program registrations, the Customer Appreciation Weekend and other upcoming events.
