Mounds View sewer has ‘flushable’ wipes build up

courtesy of City of Mounds View • Mounds View said it found a build up of so-called “flushable” wipes in its sewer system March 20.

The City of Mounds View said one of its sewers had significant build up due to so-called “flushable’ wet wipes and asked residents to stop flushing such wipes down the toilet.

Through a March 26 Facebook post, Mounds View announced a sewer lift station was having issues on March 20 because of wet wipe build up.

Wet wipes are flushable “only in the sense that they will go down the toilet,” the post said, but “they do not break down in the water.” As a result, the still-intact wipes get snagged on sewer roots, pipe deformations, pumps and motors, which can eventually backup sewer lines.

In the Facebook post, Mounds View said the March 20 clog was not the first caused by these perhaps not-so-flushable wipes.
