Local family gives back on Thanksgiving

The Kammerer family from Oakdale were part of the 150 volunteers serving 320 meals at the Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities for Thanksgiving. Being the first experience for the family, Lea Kammerer admitted there was some reluctance but soon noticed her three teenagers were enjoying serving the meals.

In the kitchen, volunteers helped get 1,025 meals delivered by hot boxes to local apartment high rises. Afterwords, while going over the experience with the grandparents, the teens said they were ready to return next year. Lea found that the well-organized and relaxed leaders ìmade it very easy to be there.î In the previous three months, the Mission enlisted 782 volunteers to gather, sort and pack close to 60,000 grocery bags to make it possibly for a Thanksgiving meal could be cooked and enjoyed at home.
