Southeast metro high schoolers earn career experience before graduation

An open house will be held May 30 to showcase the career learning accomplished in the first year of careers courses provided by a collaboration between Simley High School, Henry Sibley High School and South St. Paul Secondary, collectively known as the TriDistrict, and local businesses. Taking place at the Evolve Workplace, 260 Wentworth Ave. E., West St. Paul, this will run from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., with presentations beginning at 5:45 p.m.

Presentations will be given by Simley High School, Henry Sibley High School and South St. Paul Secondary juniors and seniors who have graduated from the TriDistrict’s first careers courses, which were provided in partnership with local employers.

The TriDistrict collaboration of Inver Grove Heights Schools, West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools and South St. Paul Public Schools worked together for three years before offering its first careers courses to Simley High School, Henry Sibley High School and South St. Paul Secondary juniors and seniors for the 2018-2019 school year. The goal of the courses was to give students real-world professional experience before graduation and prepare them to make informed college and career decisions while allowing local businesses struggling to find qualified candidates an opportunity to train and recruit local talent. On May 30, the first TriDistrict careers courses graduates will present on their experiences in these innovative, real-world courses and with the business partners.

Students enrolled in the Healthcare Careers and Medicine course learned professional skills and developed a better understanding of the medical field at Twin Cities Orthopedics during the fall semester and secured internships for the spring semester. Transportation Business and Technologies students developed their skills and got hands-on experience in North American Trailer’s garages this fall and have been building their resumes this spring in related internships.
