Tree and tree debris pick-up begins Friday, June 28 in New Brighton

In response to the Summer Solstice weekend storms, the city of New Brighton will begin free pick-up of tree and tree debris from city boulevards.

Mustangs realize dream at Target Field

Ray Kinsella built the original Field of Dreams in the middle of an Iowa cornfield in a motion picture starring Kevin Costner. For the Mounds View High School baseball team its field of dreams is a few hours north of Kinsella’s.
The Mustangs fulfilled two dreams on June 17 in downtown Minneapolis. No. 1, they got to play at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins. No. 2, they won the first baseball state championship in school history.
“Target Field, it doesn’t get any better than this,” said senior co-captain Lars Anderson.

Heart device saves 24-year-old’s life

In attempt to escape the sweltering summer, Minnesotans take refuge in lakes and pools.
However, Tara Townsend, a 24-year old from White Bear Lake, can’t enjoy this cooling relief  -- she can’t get wet.
Nor can the Century College student engage in contact sports, go through metal detectors or lift more than 25 pounds.

Residential development project approved in New Brighton Exchange

The New Brighton City Council unanimously authorized execution of a contract for private redevelopment with Pulte Homes at its Tuesday, June 11 council meeting.
Pulte has plans to build 86 single-family homes and 34 town homes at the 27-acre site once occupied by the former Midwest Asphalt and Beisswenger’s properties.
Pulte Homes is a Michigan based company that has built several developments in Minnesota, including Arden Hills and Roseville.

Shoreview council approves bid for $3.3 million street rehabilitation project

The Shoreview City Council accepted a bid from North Valley, Inc. for the city’s 2013 Street Rehabilitation Project at its Monday, June 17 council meeting.
North Valley’s bid of just over $3.3 million was the lowest of the five bids Shoreview received for the project.
The project will rehab several streets scattered throughout the city (see map) and will include extending the water main on Gaston and Grove Avenues and St. Albans Street.

First deployment sends Reserve unit overseas

Dressed in his Army gear and surrounded by family and friends, Leo Severson celebrated two occasions on June 18 - his 21st birthday and his deployment to Afghanistan.
Severson was one of 103 Minnesota soldiers from the 203rd Transportation Company of the U.S. Army Reserves being deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The soldiers said farewell to families and friends June 18 at a ceremony at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood.

One dead, one arrested in Mounds View

The body of a man was found in a third floor hallway at an apartment complex at 7750 Silver Lake Road on Thursday, June 20 at 8: 45 p.m. The man was later identified as Perry Paulson, age 49, of Mounds View, a resident of the apartment complex.

Doua Lee, Bryce Short and Ruqiyo Warsame anticipate getting their diplomas.

The diploma, family learning program and GED students from Mounds View Adult Education celebrated graduation ceremonies on Monday, June 10.
