Grade-schoolers decorate Buddy and Peace Benches for the playground


Lake Elmo Elementary first grade students with a little help from their third grade buddies got to work painting Buddy and Peace Benches May 2. The benches will be dedicated at the playground May 23. Peace signs, flowers, butterflies as well as peaceful words adorned the Peace Bench.

First- and third-grade students tried to stay still as Lake Elmo Elementary School’s artist-in-residence, Karron Nottingham, told them the rules for painting their school’s new Buddy Bench and Peace Bench.

Oakdale’s new Cub Foods is set to open May 10


Cub has expanded health and beauty sections in some of its stores, but according to Darren Caudill, Cub’s vice president of merchandising and sales, the company decided to revamp the department to create the atmosphere of a vitamin shop for the new Oakdale store.

The new Cub Foods store going into Bergen Plaza has been a bit of a mystery since the October announcement last year of the company’s plans to renovate the plaza’s former-Kmart building.

Communities unite against sexual violence

One in six women and one in 33 men are victims of sexual assault, and only a fraction of sexual assault cases are ever reported, according to John Choi Ramsey County Attorney.

“Just in Ramsey County alone, two-thirds of all the cases that are investigated by police agencies never even come to the county judge’s office or prosecution to deal with,” Choi said.

District 43 candidates are lining up

Political parties have made their endorsements

The upcoming presidential election is on everybody’s radar, but the November 2016 ballot will also allow people the chance to vote for candidates running for the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives. 

The Republican and DFL parties have been holding their endorsing conventions, and in District 43 the legislative races are beginning to take shape. 

House District 43A includes Maplewood Precincts 1-9, White Bear Lake Precincts 3-5, Mahtomedi and Willernie.

House District 43B includes North St. Paul, Oakdale north of Tenth Street and Maplewood Precincts 10 and 11. 

Senate District 43 includes the entire area of House District 43A and 43B.
