Lake Elmo resident publishes historical Ojibwe novel


submitted photo • “The 13: Ashi-niswi,” by Lake Elmo author Lorin Robinson, is a historical fiction novel based on an old Ojibwe story about 13 teenagers seeking to restore the honor of their band after a devastating raid by their enemy, the Dakota. Robinson will read from his book on Thursday, July 19, at 7 p.m. at SubText Books, located at 6 West Fifth St., St. Paul.

Dayton’s Bluff homeless shelter controversy far from over


file image • In April, First Lutheran Church, which houses Listening House homeless day shelter, sued the City of St. Paul in federal court over conditions imposed by the city on how the shelter can operate out of the church. The conditions followed months of complaints from First Lutheran neighbors about people who use the shelter defecating, urinating, and trespassing in the neighborhood, among other issues.

West St. Paul begins conversation on upping tobacco purchase age


submitted graphic • Various Minnesota cities have put new restrictions on the sale of tobacco products, be it by raising the purchase age to 21 or limiting access to flavored and menthol tobacco products.

On July 9, the West St. Paul City Council joined a conversation that’s taking place in cities across the state on increasing the age at which people can purchase tobacco to 21.
