A mission fulfilled

Out back the shelter provides a spacious, large enough for seventeen to have a snowball fight last winter, fenced in yard for all seasons.

Nearly one year after its opening, a homeless shelter to serve suburban families is going strong.
“Hope for the Journey Home,” a facility in Oakdale that provides shelter for families experiencing homelessness in suburban Washington and Ramsey counties, opened in September of 2012.
The effort is a partnership between Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Oakdale and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi. The two congregations have been joined by more than 30 churches throughout the metro area that volunteer to staff the shelter for certain weeks during the year.

Make way for 2013 Lake Elmo Days!

The annual Lake Elmo Days celebration is back, and the city is pulling out all the stops to make this year’s event bigger than ever before.
Lake Elmo Days has grown from humble beginnings into the two-day festival it is today. In 2007, the event started as a way to celebrate the Lake Elmo Fire Department’s 50-year anniversary.
After its initial success, it became the city’s one-day “Fall Festival” until 2012, when organizers added more activities and renamed it “Lake Elmo Days.”

An urban forest is growing in a surprising area of Maplewood. Where one might expect to find a desert of paint lines, concrete and vehicles, an oasis of trees, gardens and art is popping up.
Last week, the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District’s stormwater infiltration retrofit project at the Maplewood Mall parking lot was highlighted as part of the 2013 International Low Impact Development Symposium.
The symposium, which garners the attention of thousands of engineers, professors, environmentalists and other professionals each year, is hosted by the University of Minnesota at the St. Paul RiverCentre. The conference is a series of lectures and presentations about various programs across the Midwest that work to address urban water quality issues like stormwater runoff and sewer overflows.

RAHS grad onstage at Guthrie

Aeysha Kinnunen (submitted photo)

From an early start in Roseville community and school theater, Aeysha Kinnunen has landed on the Guthrie Theater stage, as “Lydia” in “Pride and Prejudice.”
The “Pride and Prejudice” production, which runs through Aug. 31, stars Vincent Kartheiser from TV’s “Mad Men” as Mr. Darcy and Ashley Rose Montondo as the intelligent, spirited Elizabeth Bennett.
Under Joe Dowling’s direction, this “Pride and Prejudice” is definitely played for laughs, and Kinnunen, as Elizabeth’s twitter-pated and brazen younger sister, gets some of the biggest.

Little Canada looks for support for Veterans Memorial

An artist’s rendering of the proposed Veterans Memorial Park in Little Canada. There is no set timeline for the project, however, the city’s Veterans Memorial Committee is hopeful construction will start by Memorial Day next spring and be complete by Veteran’s Day. (submitted artwork)

A Veterans Memorial is being proposed on city owned property adjacent to Round Lake in Little Canada. The Little Canada Veterans Memorial Committee is seeking contributions to help make the memorial a reality through their “Buy-A-Brick” fundraising program.
According to the city, about one-half of the cost of the estimated $70,000 memorial can be attributed to a parking bay on Little Canada Road and the installation of sidewalks.
