Trevino to appeal murder conviction, sentence

Nearly a year after his wife was last seen alive, East Side resident Jeffery Trevino is appealing a judge’s decision that will have him behind bars for the next 27 years if not overturned.

Maplewood acquires Fish Creek land

For around 30 years, Carolyn Peterson pushed for the purchase of an expanse of land in south Maplewood recently acquired by the city, even though she still hasn’t seen most of it.
She contracted polio at a young age, leaving her disabled, she said. When Peterson was introduced to the 70-acre Fish Creek parcel decades ago, it was too difficult for her to trek through parts of the rugged property.

Beecroft sentencing set for May

After months of waiting, Nicole Beecroft’s retrial proceedings are once again moving forward.
In September 2013, Washington County Judge John Hoffman convicted Beecroft, 24, of Oakdale of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of her newborn daughter.
A status hearing was held Feb. 14, 2014, after having been postponed for three months for several reasons, including defense attorneys’ scheduling conflicts.

East metro residents and leaders recently previewed a project that would add 12 miles of a light-rail train line or designated bus lanes, linking St. Paul with neighboring suburbs, including Maplewood, Oakdale and Lake Elmo.

North St. Paul residents invited to air car-show concerns

Before car collectors and admirers swarm along East Seventh Avenue this summer, members of the North St. Paul History Cruzers want to make sure those who live in the area year-round are heard and helped.
The nonprofit group and North St. Paul city staff are hosting a community meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the Victorian Room of K&J Catering, 2546 E. Seventh Ave.

Archdiocese discloses sexual abuse claims against nine more priests

On Monday, Feb. 17, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis released a list of nine more priests thought to have been credibly accused of sexual misconduct.
The archdiocese released the names following a comprehensive file review by Kinsale Management Consulting, an outside firm based in Los Angeles, Calif. The review began in December 2013, when a Ramsey County judge ordered the archdiocese to release the list of priests who had been credibly accused of sexual abuse. At that time, the archdiocese disclosed claims against 33 priests.

Tonya Raleigh faces assault charge in shooting of 18-year-old daughter in North St. Paul


Authorities broke windows to gain entry into an apartment complex at 2345 E. 11th Ave., in North St. Paul, in order to search for Tonya Hale Raleigh on Feb. 9, hours after she allegedly shot her 18-year-old daughter. Raleigh is now facing a second-degree assault charge.

The North St. Paul Police Department on Monday, Feb. 10, released the name of a suspect in a shooting that occurred early Sunday.
Monday afternoon, police were searching for Tonya Hale Raleigh, 35, of North St. Paul. She is suspected of shooting her 18-year-old daughter in the leg after they argued, according to North St. Paul police Capt. Dustin Nikituk. He said the victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
