Raising flags for American spirit

The Rotary Club of North St. Paul, Maplewood and Oakdale is launching a project to decorate the communities in red, white and blue on patriotic holidays.
The club’s project, “The American Spirit,” is a service that installs American flags in residents’ yards on six holidays throughout the year.
“If you look around, you don’t see that many flags,” Rotary Club member Joseph Miller said. “(This project) helps grow this concept of patriotism.”

Man assaulted with machete at Tanners Lake, charges say

A St. Paul man has been charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon after an incident at Tanners Lake Park July 20.
Just before 11 p.m., an Oakdale police officer on patrol near Tanners Lake boat launch was flagged down by a man who said he’d been assaulted by a man wielding a large knife, according to the criminal complaint. The man had cuts on his lip and left hand.
The complaint states the officer observed another man standing next to a minivan who said his friend, 28-year-old Raymond Guzard Aaron Jr., had gotten into an argument with the victim in the parking lot and that he’d tried to “diffuse the situation.”

Meet the 2013 Maplewood primary election candidates

Only the Aug. 13 Maplewood primary stands between the candidates for mayor and city council and Election Day Nov. 5. There are currently three candidates for mayor and six candidates for two city council seats.
One mayoral candidate and two council candidates will be eliminated after the primary election. Several candidates responded to the Review’s candidate questionnaires.
Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, for the primary election. Those who are not currently registered to vote may do so at the polls. Call the Maplewood Citizens Services Department at 651-249-2001 to learn more about which forms of identification will be accepted for same-day registration.

Helen Street senior housing project moves forward

The Helen Street senior housing project in North St. Paul is finally making strides after a series of minor delays.
At the July 2 North St. Paul city council meeting, the final plat of the Helen Street senior living development project was approved with a few small changes requested by city engineer Morgan Dawley.
The two-acre project, located on the west side of Helen Street, south of Highway 36 and just north of Seppala Boulevard, has been in the works with the city since last summer. The parcel was once occupied by Bartholmy Body & Auto Service and small, two-story homes. The last of those structures was razed last fall.

North St. Paul approves city manager contract

At a special meeting on Thursday, July 25, the North St. Paul City Council approved the contract for incoming city manager Jason Ziemer.
He is currently the city administrator of Maple Plain, a western Hennepin County community with a total area of about 1.1 square miles and a population of about 1,800, according to the 2010 census.
North St. Paul city attorney Joel Jamnik negotiated the contract with Ziemer and presented a tentatively approved version to the council. Jamnik explained that the contract was fairly standard, with a few instances where Ziemer had requested individual provisions.

Maplewood OK’s tax increment financing for 3M project

At the July 22 city council meeting, Maplewood officials held a public hearing and voted to establish a tax-increment financing district with 3M for the construction of a new research and development laboratory on its 28-acre campus on the corner of McKnight and Conway avenues.
The TIF agreement will help 3M move forward with the project, which is estimated to cost around $156 million and will house about 700 employees and support staff when it is completed in two years. These employees already work for 3M, but will be relocated into the new 400,000-square-foot building.

Maplewood gearing up for summer vote

If you’re a Maplewood resident, be sure to mark your calendars for the primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 13. The city’s 16 polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the winners will advance to the municipal general election Nov. 5.
There are three candidates for mayor and six candidates for the two council seats that will expire in December. The primary will narrow the field to two mayoral candidates and four for city council on Election Day in November.

National Night Out noted in Maplewood, North St. Paul

National Night OUT, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, will involve over 15,704 communities from all 50 states , U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.  In all, over 37.5 million people are expected to participate in "America's Night Out Against Crime."
