Man sentenced for brutal, head-on crash in Roseville


courtesy of Roseville Police Department • Michael Terry Flodine was sentenced April 26 to jail time for the Dec. 2, 2016, crash, in which he plowed head-on into the SUV driven by Steven Gernes on Fairview Avenue in Roseville, severely injuring Gernes.

The man who drove the wrong way down Fairview Avenue at speeds faster than 100 miles per hour and head-on into an SUV in a December, 2016, crash that bewildered area residents has been convicted of criminal vehicular operation.

‘Why I run’ panel discussion a success

Being at home in Momma’s Kitchen


Marjorie Otto/Review • DeMarco Cavil, an East Sider turned professional chef, is returning to his childhood home to open a restaurant, Momma’s Kitchen, dedicated to his mother. The restaurant will have a soft opening on June 7 and will be located at 1058 Maryland Ave. E.

For DeMarco Cavil, coming home and opening a restaurant on the East Side is a dream come true. 

“It feels so great,” Cavil said of opening a restaurant in the neighborhood where he grew up.

More direct travel coming for East Side transit


file photo • Ramsey County traffic engineers have decided to make permanent the three-lane configuration on Maryland Avenue between Johnson Parkway and Payne Avenue. A mill and overlay of the arterial street will be completed in May.

One of the main bus lines connecting St. Paul to the international airport and the Mall of America will be extended through the East Side starting June 9.

A man was charged May 2 for the death of an Oakdale man who was stabbed and robbed outside a South St. Paul apartment building last summer.

Railroad Island to be an energy conservation hotspot


courtesy of Google Maps • A new solar garden, part of an energy conservation program taking place in Railroad Island, will be located at the end of Minnehaha Avenue near the Village on Rivoli housing development. Homes with low income occupants will be hooked up to the solar garden for free, with the goal of eliminating barriers to renewable energy.

The little neighborhood of Railroad Island has become a big target when it comes to energy consumption and renewable energy.

North High School robotics team to compete in championship for the first time


submitted photo • The North High School robotics team was one of three teams on the winning alliance at the Northern Lights Regional event held in Duluth in March, which secured its spot at the FIRST Championship to be held April 28 in Detroit, Michigan. The team also competed in the Medtronic Foundation Regional event in Minneapolis last month. It is common for teams to attend more than one regional event if they can afford to do so.

The North High School robotics team, the Bionic Polars, have qualified for the FIRST Robotics Championship tournament for the first time, following a successful regional competition in Duluth held in early March.

Short-term mental health facility opens in Maplewood


Aundrea Kinney/Review • During an April 12 open house event, community members were welcomed into Afton Place to see the renovations HealthPartners did to the building and to learn more about the short-term residential mental health transitional support program that began there April 18. After touring the building, most in attendance gathered to chat in the dining area where patients eat family-style meals and learn nutritional and budgeting skills.

Despite a bump in the road just over a year ago, Afton Place, a short-term residential mental health transitional support facility in Maplewood, began taking in patients April 18 after hosting a successful public open house event the week before.
